Message:Tantalus was a king and the son of Zeus in Greek mythology, known for his hubris and subsequent eternal punishment in the underworld. He was a privileged guest at the gods' table but betrayed their trust by stealing ambrosia and nectar and, in the most famous version of his crime, serving his own son, Pelops, to them. His punishment involves being eternally thirsty and hungry, with water and fruit constantly just out of his reach, which gave rise to the English word "tantalize."
Yet even more interesting is how literary TV writers once were. I cannot imagine a writer today calling his death device the Tantalus Field.
